Why Did Rick Chop Off Hershels Leg? How Rick Saved Hershel From The Zombie Bite

Why did Rick Chop off Hershels leg in The Walking Dead? In Season 3 of TWD, which in my opinion was likely the most depressing season of the show, Hershel gets bit by a walker at one point, and he basically faces a choice, succumb to a slow and painful death by fever, or sever off the limb as soon as humanly possible. Rick Grimes, knowing that he would choose life, and somewhat selfishly thinking of his ability to be a doctor for Laurie, takes out his hatchet and chops off his leg, right at the shin! In one of the most gruesome scenes in the show, where he has an audience that sees him mercilessly chop off the old mans leg, this no doubt added to what is now Rick Grimes amazingly resilient psyche. And so, in this blog post, I will talk about Season 3 of the Walking Dead, why I think the Prison Arc of the show truly made Rick Grimes as strong as he now is, and what steps led to him eventually getting there. Why Did Rick Chop Off Hershels Leg, And Why I Think the Prison Arc Was the Most Brutal of the Show

If Season 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead were basically the warm up rounds (the camp and the one zombie that showed up once in a blue moon, and the overall peace of the farm, were basically a cake walk compared to the battles that they faced for resources out on the road in Season 3. Season 3 opens up with them having been out on the road, scavenging and raiding houses for dog food and Campbell’s soup cans for like 8 months. From here, we see Rick out on a hunt for some food for the group, and finds a prison that is overrun by Walkers. He and the group take them all out, and once again have a small moment of peace as they have some shelter and fences surrounding them. This however, eventually leads to war as the Governor finds them and battles against them for resources. This leads to Season 4 with the fight against Terminus, before they finally find some sort of even moderately long term safe haven via Alexandria in Season 5, although this also leads to a new war, and this time against a much stronger foe in the Saviors.

Final Thoughts On Why Did Rick Chop Off Hershels Leg?

And so, Rick chopped off Hershel’s leg because he was in a very bad spot in Season 3 of The Walking Dead. This is the Season where Lori dies, where we literally see Rick crack and lose his mind, even yelling at the ghost of Lori at one point and hallucinating someone on the other end of the phone, and even postponing war until their shelter was taken down. Time and time again they were beaten down in Season 3 and 4, and slowly but surely, he took the gradual ascent and descent to becoming as strong as he is now within the show.
